SECURITY ALARM SYSTEM

IDEATION

A key feature of this proposal is a scenario of using a pin pad. Usually the password consists of letters and digits. Sometimes it is hard to remember, right? Here is the way that makes it much easier. Password is entered by pressing keys in a particular sequence. For instance: up, up, left, down. Process is based on visual memory.

FIRST ITERATION

Buttons are placed round a circular body. Display is placed in a center. Buttons work as a pin pad from the start, then after password confirmation is done buttons turn to menu navigation. There was an idea to make several types of buttons - one for password, another for menu.

We came up with this idea, however it is easier and much cheaper for manufacturing. 

DAY MODE \ NIGHT MODE

First proposal in CAD. Main sensors are: gas analyzer, motion sensor, light sensor and additional features for smart house management. Main device: input pin pad, keyboard and computer. Body - ABS plastic, display - monochrome LCD, lighted with LED. Battery powered. Wall mounted. Door sensor: two parts. Smaller one is placed on a door, bigger one is placed on a doorpost. Dimensions are determined by chip.

FAILURE

Failure. We overlooked scenario of mounting on a wall. It was thought that the installation was made on a wall by using wall plugs. To drill the wall is not so fun, huh? So we completely forgot about that in this proposal. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

After completing the design research (mentioning our previous omissions) we decided to remove the display and move control to a mobile app.  This decision reduced costs of production but increased chip value. Eventually there were essential things only - pin pad buttons. For the main device (sketch above) we used our favourite feature: to made the mold as cheaply as it could be. We made a press-button as part of the body. There was one mold less. A line around the button was a plastic part. It was lighted with LED and informs the device status.
 

SECOND ITERATION

Here is the result. System of several devices do manage security in a smart house. Devices work on battery power. During the installation there is no need to drill a wall. Objects are mounted on 3M adhesive tape.
